This Saturday, April 8, a team of college students and recent graduates will be undertaking a huge task across the country to hear what Irish people have to say about mental health.
The 700km spin is also hoping to raise awareness for their campaign to fund youth mental health projects through charities including ISPCC Childline, Samaritans and Aware.
The unique retailer-based fundraising campaign asks customers to donate just €1 at the till when making their purchase at partner stores and restaurants including; Applegreen, Mace, Londis, XL, Starbucks, Spar, EuroSpar, Fresh, XL and members of the Restaurants Association of Ireland. People can also donate online or through text.
Fronted by golfing hero Shane Lowry and run in conjunction with the Irish Youth Foundation, this year’s campaign aims to build on last year’s success of raising over €172,000 for youth homelessness and will focus on youth mental health.
The team will be travelling out from Dublin visiting Carlow, Cork, Limerick and Galway and many towns and villages on the way. They will be stopping to talk to ask people what they think about mental health in Ireland.
The campaign is supported y the Lions Clubs of Ireland who will be volunteering on the weekend too. Speaking about the initiative, director of One for Ireland, Conor Clancy, says:
“We have heard what celebrities and media figures have to say about mental health and their contribution has been fantastic. But now we want to hear what the people of Ireland have to say as a whole. What frustrates us? What gives us hope? What is missing and where can we go from here? The people who know best are those interacting in their communities on a daily basis and we want to give that a voice.”
