The Cabinet is set to reach a decision today on a range of tighter restrictions as the number of Covid-19 cases in Ireland continues to escalate.
Ireland looks set to return to the 'severe restrictions' we saw back in the spring of 2020, with schools closures being extended until the end of January and the shutting down of non-essential construction.
Here's a summary of all the new measures that are expected to be announced by Government later today....
Schools
Ministers are considering closing most schools and reverting to online learning until the end of January. Schools for children with special needs will operate as normal. Crèches will remain open for children of essential workers and vulnerable children.
Travel
It is being proposed that all arrivals into Ireland will have to show a negative Covid-19 test from within the previous 72 hours. People will still need to self-isolate for 14 days after they arrive.
Retail
Click and collect services offered by non-essential retail outlets will be stopped. Home delivery will be allowed to continue.
Construction
Most construction will close with the exception of social housing and essential public works. A full list of essential construction will be defined by cabinet.
This morning it has been confirmed that 921 people are in hospital with Covid-19, surpassing the April 2020 peak of 881. Details on the new tighter restrictions are expected to be confirmed later today.
