Every Area In Ireland Will Soon Have A Garda Specifically Assigned To It

Every single area, and the majority of streets in the country will have a garda assigned to it, says Assistant Commissioner Pat Leahy.

Leahy told TheJournal.ie that the community policing plan, which is already in place in north inner city Dublin, and is being trialled across Louth and Kildare.

He said:

"We’ll be assigning ownership of places to individual gardaí and the garda reserve and they will be held accountable for policing and quality of life issues in those small areas.

“It brings about more accountability and ownership. It also allows gardaí to be innovative and creative – they can come up with their own ideas and solutions and we’ll provide policing data.

“We’ve committed to teams in every division around the country”.

People will be able to raise their concerns with the assigned garda in their area, and gardai are using census data and other information to that officers in charge will have a better understanding of their area and the socio-economic factors.

Leahy added that everybody should know exactly who their community garda is.
