Storm Fionn is causing havoc this morning as snow, winds and ice grip the nation.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution as road conditions are hazardous nationwide while an orange gale warning was issued this morning for all Irish coasts.

The Department Of Education has issued a statement to confirm that schools will not be obliged to close today but can do so if management decides it is an appropriate step.

A statement reads:

"It’s entirely up to the boards of management whether a school opens or closes due to snow.

"Only in a red weather alert situation would there be a nationwide closure of schools."
