Gardaí have warned the public to be more careful about leaving their cars to de-ice while unattended in the mornings after a number of them were stolen.
Cars have been stolen from right out of people’s driveways in both Dublin and Cork recently as the engines were left running while they defrosted.
Three of the robberies happened in just one morning this week and only one car has since been recovered.
Posting on the official Garda Síochána Facebook page they wrote, ‘We would like to advise motorists not to leave their cars unattended when defrosting in the morning during cold weather.
‘When defrosting your car, please be inside your car and take the time to defrost windscreens thoroughly.
‘Three cars have been stolen yesterday morning from driveways in parts of Dublin and Cork.
‘Two have not been located. Remember to make sure tyres and wipers are adequate for cold driving conditions.’
On Thursday, Met Éireann extended their status yellow warning until 12pm on Sunday, after it was originally scheduled to end on Saturday.
The updated warning says, 'Continuing very cold until Sunday with severe frosts at night and ice on untreated surfaces.
'Some snow accumulations today on high ground over Leinster, Connacht and south Ulster. Tonight there will also be some accumulations of snow on lower levels over central and southern parts of Leinster and over east Munster.'
