Tributes Paid To Martin McGuinness Following His Death At The Age Of 66

Former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland Martin McGuinness has died at the age of 66.

The news was confirmed this morning and follows McGuinness' resignation from his role in early January.

It's understood that he was suffering from a rare health condition and passed away in Derry last night.

Sinn Féin has released a statement this morning, paying tribute to the key role that McGuinness has played in the Northern Ireland peace process.

“Throughout his life, Martin showed great determination, dignity and humility and it was no different during his short illness,” said Gerry Adams.

“He was a passionate republican who worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation and for the re-unification of his country. But above all, he loved his family and the people of Derry and he was immensely proud of both."

DUP leader Arlene Foster added that while history would "record differing views" on Mr McGuinness, it would "also show that his contribution to the political and peace process was significant”.
