At Least 15 People Injured In Annual Pilgrimage Climb Of Croagh Patrick

Poor weather conditions yesterday meant the climb up Croagh Patrick for religious pilgrims was even more treacherous, with Mayo Mountain Rescue assisting at least 15 people.

The Journal reports that thousands of people attempted the 764 metre climb yesterday, which is traditionally held on the last Sunday in July.

12 different organisations, including the Irish Coast Guard and the Irish Air Corp, provided rescue efforts.

Mayo Mountain rescue posted a full list of the 15 causalities, which included a 70-year-old man who suffered a heart attack air lifted to hospital, an 82-year-old male suffered an arm injury, escorted off the hill by Order Of Malta, a 46-year-old male sustained serious upper body injuries, dislocated shoulder and facial injuries, and a 13-year-old female suffered "minor injuries."

Some pilgrims even attempt the climb barefoot, with 11 masses held in the chapel on top of the mountain.
