An Irish Teenager Accidentally Spent His Mam’s Entire Month’s Wages Playing FIFA

A mam in Cork has said that her family is facing a difficult Christmas this this year after her 14-year-old son accidentally spent her entire month's wages playing a FIFA game on the Playstation. 

The woman spoke to PJ Coogan on Cork's 96FM on Thursday and said that she had bought the FIFA 18 game for her teenage son on her debit card, however he then purchased points while playing the football game without realising.

She said that at no point did the game ask to verify card details nor did her son have to click any sort of payment confirmation - the card details had reportedly been saved automatically from the debit card the mother used to purchase the game with. 

The family is now struggling to make ends meet for Christmas as the mam lost her entire month's wages and her Christmas bonus. She only realised when she went to withdraw money from her account and was told she had insufficient funds. 

The mother wants to warn other families of the potential financial dangers of the game 

She said: “I went down to the bank to get money out. I was told I had insufficient funds. I was just after being paid and I didn’t understand what was wrong so then I rang the bank.

“They said PlayStation was constantly moving money from my account. It ended up being my month’s pay.

“I contacted PlayStation and they told me that it was an adults' game. I explained he was 14 and he didn’t understand he was playing with money.

"He didn’t have to do anything or click anything to activate my card."

The son is so upset at his mistake that he has become withdrawn and won't leave his room 

"He reckoned he has spoiled Christmas for his family. I can't even get him to school," she said.

“There is no point in giving out to him because he is punishing himself more than I could ever have imagined."
