An Irish Player Helped His Team To African Champions League Glory Last Night

The League Of Ireland season may have come to an end a couple of weeks back but one of its former players was performing on a much grander stage last night.

Ex-Bohemian FC winger Ayman Ben Mohamed was part of the Espérance Sportive de Tunis team which completed a remarkable comeback to be win the African Champions League Final last night and thus being crowned kings of the continent.

Trailing 3-1 to Egyptian side Al Ahly after the first leg, the Tunisian club turned the deficit around by winning 3-0 to clinch their third African title. Ben Mohamed played the full 90 minutes after missing the first leg through injury.

Ben Mohamed is the son of an Irish mother and Tunisian father and was raised here in Dublin where he studied at UCD. He became a favourite of Bohemians fans throughout the 2016 campaign but unfortunately has chosen to represent Tunisia at international level rather than Ireland.

With a Champions League medal now on his mantlepiece, our loss is certainly their gain. Not many Irish players can claim to be the champion of a whole continent so it really is a remarkable achievement by Ben Mohamed.

Himself and his team mates will now prepare to play in the FIFA Club World Cup in UAE next month, where they could come up against the might of European champions Real Madrid. It would certainly be a far cry from Dalymount Park of a Friday night.
