An Important Warning Has Been Issued To Students Ahead Of Valentine’s Day

Irish students are being warned to be careful after sexually transmitted diseases among people aged between 15 and 24 spiked by 11% last year.  

The warning is part of the Union of Students in Ireland's sexual health campaign, which will be rolled out in campuses across Ireland this week. 

Condoms and lube will be given to students alongside information about sex, consent, STI testing and contraception.

In 2017, there were 5200 cases of young people diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea or genital herpes. 

"We would actively encourage people who are thinking of having sex or are sexually active, to think ahead and practice safer sex," said Helen Deely, Head of the HSE Sexual Health & Crisis Pregnancy Programme.
