Aldi Ireland Becomes The First Supermarket Chain To Pay The Living Wage

Aldi Ireland have announced that it will be introducing a new minimum wage of €11.70 for its employees.

Aldi is the first chain supermarket in the country to introduce a wage that matches the living wage rate recommended by the Living Wage Technical Group.

The living wage is a rate designed to make it possible to provide people with sufficient income to achieve an agreed acceptable minimum standard of living.

Giles Hurley, Managing Director for Aldi, said: "Our store colleagues are the cornerstone of our business. Without their hard work and dedication day in, day out, we would be unable to provide customers with the lowest grocery prices in Ireland."

He added: "We are committed to offering the best pay and benefits in the industry and will continue to do so."

The new rate is set to come into effect from 1 February and represents a 20c increase on entry-level pay for Aldi's store assistants, stock assistants and caretakers.
