About 20 People Have Had To Be Rescued From Galway Christmas Market’s Ferris Wheel

About 20 people had to be rescued after the Ferris Wheel at Galway Christmas Market got stuck this evening. 

Emergency services were called to the scene and freed passengers stuck high in cabins using cherry pickers. 

The wheel stopped turning at 6pm and many people were trapped in the air until 9pm. 

The incident occurred just minutes after the market was officially opened with the switching on the Christmas lights. 

Gardai in Galway told Newstalk that all passengers are now down safely and there were no injuries, though it was a very cold night to be trapped up in the sky. 

There were a number of children among the passengers. 

"We are tremendously grateful to all those who helped us this evening, The Fire Service, An Garda Síochána and the paramedics who made sure everyone was safe and sound and reassured," the organisers of the market wrote on Facebook. 

"It was a slow process but particular thanks go to the tremendous crew who got the job done safely and expertly."
