Eleven people arrested by Gardaí as part of an investigation into alleged sexual exploitation of children have been released without charge.
Yesterday evening it was announced that Gardai had arrested 11 adults (six females and five males ranging in age from 20s to 70s) on Monday as part of an investigation alleged sexual exploitation of children who were resident in the Newcastle West Garda district in Limerick.
The adults were arrested in Limerick, Tipperary and Kerry and were detained yesterday at various Garda Stations under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows for questioning of up to 24 hours.
It is understood that all of those arrested are part of one extended family and that almost 20 children have been taken into care after the abuse they received.
Gardai say they cannot release any further information as the investigation is "ongoing".
