Relationships can be complex.
Sometimes you go through amazing patches with your partner, when you just can't seem to get enough of them. And other times, you literally cannot stand them.
Things like arguments and jealousy are totally normal from time to time, but if they become regular, this when you need to realise that your relationship might be entering an unhealthy stage.
However, Prevention has outlined some basic warning signs that show your relationship could be turning toxic, and they're pretty easy to recognise.
Let's be honest - we all get jealous from time to time, especially where romance is involved. However, when jealousy consumes the entire relationship, it's a bad sign.
Couples consultant and coach, Lesli Doares, told the publication: "This can show up as constantly having to account for your whereabouts and who you are with."
"Everything you do must not just include them, but revolve around them."
"You might find it easier to either lie—and, when your lies are uncovered, everything blows up anyway—or you choose to stop having a life, friends, and interests of your own because the price is too high."
Again, the odd argument isn't necessarily going to tear your relationship apart, but regular heated arguments can only mean one thing.
Erin Lewis Ballard, marriage and family therapist said: "If your conflicts are incredibly intense and lead to drastic words or actions, then there is cause for concern."
"Experiencing 'zero to sixty,' or being fine one day and then in crisis the next day, is also a sign that your relationship is toxic."
Not to mention, any form of physical violence is a MAJOR red flag.
Being hesitant to talk to your partner about things that are really getting you down can be another bad sign.
Whether it's family problems, a personal issue or something your partner is doing that you don't like, it's important that you can talk to them and resolve things.
Jane Reardon, a therapist based in L.A. said: "Let's face it, it’s not always easy to confront someone you care so much about."
"But when couples opt for keeping it comfortable instead of keeping it real, I hear a death knell ringing."
