The average age of Irish couples who got married in 2019 has been revealed as part of a Central Statistics Office report issued today.
The CSO findings indicate that Irish brides in an opposite-sex marriage had an average age of 34.8 years throughout 2019. This up from 34.4 years in
2018. The average age of grooms in an opposite-sex union also rose in 2019, at 36.8 years compared to 36.4 a year previously.
Males in same-sex marriages had an average age 39.8 (down from 40.1 in 2018) while females in same-sex marriages had an average age of 39.3 (up from 38.7 in 2018).
The report also found that Friday was the most popular day to get married and August was the most popular month to wed. Speaking about the findings, statistician Anne Hennessy said: "There were 20,313 marriages in Ireland in 2019 including 640 same-sex marriages. This equates to a crude (unadjusted) marriage rate of 4.1 per 1,000 population.
"Although the average age of grooms in an opposite-sex marriage was at its highest to date at 36.8 years, the average age of men in a same-sex marriage was higher at 39.8 years. The average age of brides in an opposite-sex marriage was 34.8 in 2019, while the comparable age for women in a same-sex marriage was 39.3 years."
