On the same week that he was released and returned back to Ireland, Ibrahim Halawa confirmed that he would appear on 'The Late Late Show' the following Friday for his first TV interview since he arrived home.
He chatted to host Ryan Tubridy about his four year imprisonment in Egypt where he was arrested during mass protests in Cairo in 2013.
Much of the interview was spent talking about the rumours that surrounded Halawa - it was said that he destroyed his Irish passport and was allegedly involved in the Muslim Brotherhood.
Halawa has since come out and told The Irish Independent that he regrets doing the interview on the National Broadcaster's biggest chat show.
Speaking at the University of Limerick, Halawa said that the "biggest mistake of my life was sitting on that couch, twenty minutes on that couch could never justify four years of torment.” and that if he could turn back time, he would refuse the interview.
“I was being scrutinized; I wasn’t being brought to hear my story.
“I looked at the cameras and felt that no matter how much these cameras film for the next 28 minutes, they will never fulfill my four years and two months of pain,” he said.
“You get out of prison and they put you in another cell, it really kills you.
“There were times after where I would wish I could go back to my prison cell."
However, an RTÉ spokesperson told the publication that Halawa was "aware in advance of the interview, that he would given an opportunity to address and clarify those longstnading rumours"
