Houseparty has offered a $1m reward to the first person who can offer proof of a commercial smear campaign that allegedly spread rumours about hacking.
One of the most talked-about apps to come out of the international social distancing measures put in place to combat the spread of Covid-19, Houseparty allows users to engage in video calls with multiple friends and family at the same time.
However, in recent days, rumours began to circulate that the service was not secure and accounts on platforms such as Netflix and Spotify had been compromised.
Houseparty has now moved to deny the speculation by issuing a statement which says 'All Houseparty accounts are safe - the service is secure, has never been compromised, and doesn’t collect passwords for other sites. We have spent the past few weeks feeling humbled and grateful that we can be such a large part of bringing people together during such a hard time.'
As well as that, the company has suggested it is willing to provide someone with a very healthy sum of money in exchange for information. The statement concludes with 'We are investigating indications that the recent hacking rumors were spread by a paid commercial smear campaign to harm Houseparty. We are offering a $1,000,000 bounty for the first individual to provide proof of such a campaign to bounty@houseparty.com.'
