Few things signal summer to us quite as strongly as fresh sea air. Whether you're sailing through a picturesque coastal region, trying your hand at stand-up paddle-boarding or surfing the waves, spending time on the water gives us permission to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and breathe in new surroundings.
Cork's east-coast is simply bursting at the seams with water-based activities, so to help you get the most of your next summer break, we've put together a few of our favourite ways to experience the water this summer. And, once you've soaked up that breeze or enjoyed a dip into the Irish Sea, we've rounded up our favourite local restaurants where you can relax, refuel and be ready for another day or two on the water.
Head to the picturesque Cork harbour, climb aboard the Spike Island ferry and prepare to step back in time on a tour of this fascinating island. As you explore the island, you'll learn all about how it was once considered the 'Irish Alcatraz', all while taking in a healthy dose of sea air. Once you return to dry land, grab some dinner with a view at Jacob's Ladder Restaurant in the WatersEdge Hotel.
Head to the sandy shores of Inch Beach on Cork's coast and book a lesson with Swell Surf School. This east coast surf school caters to all levels and they'll provide everything you need to take to the waves. After your lesson, relax at the nearby Sweaty Sanctuary Sauna and if you fancy a post-surfing pint Poc ar Buile is a short spin away.
Book a cruise with Ocean Escapes, Cork's largest RIB operator, and you'll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the county's rugged eastern coast. A variety of trips are available here, so you can tailor your adventure to your own preferences, whether that's with the fun-filled City Adventure, or with the super scenic Harbour Discovery Tour. After your excursion, head to The Bosun Bar and Restaurant for a tasty seafood meal.
Weave your way around Cork City from the River Lee with a 90-minute stand-up paddle board tour from Cork City SUP. Your guide will bring you up to speed on how to SUP and then you'll be well equipped to paddle through the city, taking in some of its most iconic landmarks. Make a reservation at Amicus Restaurant and enjoy a unique post-SUP dinner in this former 19th century warehouse building.
Ballycotton Sea Adventures are known for their fun-filled exhilarating boat tours of the striking Ballycotton Coast, so an excursion with them warrants a spot on your Cork itinerary. During the 90-minute tour, keep your eyes peeled for a possible glimpse of dolphins or whales as you feast your eyes on the many sights along the way. Afterwards, pop into The Blackbird Bar for their signature fish and chips, and if you're lucky, some live music.
