We all know that moderation is key, but it's rare that a nutritionist actually advises we order an extra burger.

However, according to dietician Emily Field, if you do happen to find yourself in McDonald's, it's actually healthier to order two burgers and skip the fat-and-sugar laden sides that come with meal deals.

She told Business Insider UK: "By swapping the fries for a second burger, you're nearly doubling your protein intake while reducing the amount of fat and carbs you're eating.

"Since fast-food is already high in fat and carbs and pretty low in protein, this simple switch could help steady your blood sugar levels."

While burger buns obviously contain carbs, the protein in them helps your body to break down the carbs, and "buffer against sharp dips and spikes in insulin levels".

Balancing fats, carbs and proteins will help to curb cravings keep blood sugar levels steady, so this approach makes sense.

By swapping the fries for a second burger, you are doubling your protein intake and reducing your fat and carbs.

It's what the doctor ordered.
