A "success story" and a "very welcome development" are two of the phrases that have been used to describe the discovery of nitrite-free bacon which will be soon available on supermarket shelves.
Northern Irish food manufacturer, Finnebrogue has stated that its Naked Bacon product is completely free of nitrites, preservatives, E numbers and all allergens.
Many types of processed meat - such as bacon and sausages - contain nitrite and nitrates and in 2015, the World Health Organisation said that processed meat, including bacon, is carcinogenic meaning it has the potential to cause cancer.
WHO added that nitrites in the body could form a cancerous compound called nitrosamines which can damage DNA.
However, according to The Telegraph, Finnebrogue said that in association with a Spanish chemist, a new flavouring will be applied meaning that they are able to produce quality breaking while excluding those cancerous nitrates.
If successful, you can imagine that it is only a matter of time before the product begins to come across to Ireland.
