Everyone Remain Calm – There’s A Serious Tequila Shortage On The Way

If you're the kind of person who won't rest until everyone in the pub has done a shot, you're not going to like this news. 

There's a major tequila shortage on the horizon due to low supplies of its key ingredient, agave. 

Agave plants, which are also used to make sweeteners, take eight years to mature. 

Unfortunately only 17.7 million of those planted in 2011 are ready to be harvested, according to the Tequila Regulatory Council and National Tequila Industry Chamber in Mexico. 

This shortage has led to producers using plants that are only four years old out of desperation, creating tequila of a much poorer quality. 

The price per kilo has also risen from 21c to $1.18 over the past two years, and the shortage looks set to continue until at least 2021.
