East Cork pub Batt Murphy’s announces closure after 46 years

"It has always been an honour".

After serving the town of Midleton in Cork loyally since 1986, the owners of Batt Murphy's have announced their retirement. Batt & Helen Murphy took to Facebook to announce the news, "with great sadness and regret". The Murphys wrote:

It is with great sadness and regret that we announce our retirement from our bar on 49 Main Street, Midleton. It has always been an honour and a privilege to welcome the many who came through our doors in the last 46 years. In that time many good friends have passed away and all are sadly missed.

They thanked the customers who visited them over the years, providing "great days & nights of fun, sport, ceol agus craic", and the many musicians who frequented the bar and "had the place hopping with people singing & dancing, on the seats and occasionally on the tables as well". They also thanked the staff who gave their "heart filled energy to our customers" over the years, along with their own family, most of whom worked in the bar at one stage or another. Messages and well wishes have flooded in for Batt and Helen from Batt Murphy's many patrons, recalling "great memories from both sides of the bar" along with stag nights, trad sessions and Christmas parties over their 46 years in business.
