Galway’s Carbon Nightclub Is Being Turned Into A Wetherspoons Pub And Beer Garden

Carbon nightclub in Galway is closing down at the end of the summer and being replaced by a Wetherspoons pub and beer garden. The popular student club announced earlier this week that it would be closing its doors for good on August 21 and it’s now been revealed that it will be taken over by the UK pub chain JD Wetherspoon. A post on the venue’s Facebook page stated, ‘It is with a heavy heart that we announce Carbon Nightclub will be closing its doors for the final time on August 21 this year. It added, ‘Please drop in over the next 6 weeks to have a drink with us in our final farewell. We will be hosting a number of nostalgic events to celebrate the life of Carbon so keep an eye out!’ The Journal.ie reports that JD Wetherspoon now plans to invest €2.5 million in transforming the space on Eglinton Street into a 4,000 sq ft pub and 1,900 sq ft beer garden. JD Wetherspoon’s general manager for Ireland, Alistair Broome, commented, “We have enjoyed great success with our existing pubs in the Republic of Ireland and look forward to opening in Galway.” The pub chain already owns seven pubs in the Republic of Ireland, with another planned for Waterford and a 'super pub' and hotel also in the works for Dublin's Camden Street.
