1. McLeary's Restaurant
If you live in Waterford and you haven't been to McLeary's, I can only assume you've been living under a rock for the last eight years.
Everyone - and I mean everyone - at home says this place is their number one choice for a special meal in the city.
I've been there myself a couple of times and the food was excellent. The service is brilliant - friendly and attentive without being overbearing. They have an à la carte menu and an early bird so it should suit all budgets.
The restaurant is situated on the quay so I would suggest getting a table upstairs near the window so you can look out over the water.
2. L'Atmosphere
L'Atmosphere has a long-standing reputation in Waterford for excellent French cuisine and great service.
Tucked away in within a Georgian townhouse in the heart of Waterford City, this eatery is an ideal option for a romantic meal for two.
This place can be expensive, but it does great deals for two around Valentine's Day.
3. Olive Tree
If you love tapas, then you have to pay a visit to the Olive Tree tapas and wine bar.
Ideal for a birthday or maybe a catch-up between old friends, the Olive Tree is warm and inviting with a menu filled with some of the tastiest tapas dishes and sharing boards I've ever had.
A little pricey, but definitely worth it.
4. Bodéga
Bodéga is a Waterford institution.
Known for their amazing produce from local suppliers, Bódega is perfect if you want a fun, lively atmosphere to celebrate your special occasion.
The wine and cocktail menu is one of the best in the city and if you're undecided about what to go for on their extensive menu, I would recommend any of their seafood dishes.
Divine.
Very good value for money.
5. Sabai
This is a great place that is ideal for a Christmas night out as well as a romantic meal for two.
Prices are very reasonable considering it's probably the best Thai and Vietnamese restaurant in Waterford.
Located on the mall in Waterford, it's perfect for anyone who wants to go on to another pub or club afterwards.
This places oozes atmosphere and looks out on one of the most historic parts of Waterford.
6. La Bohème
If you're looking to go all out for your special occasion, then I could not recommend La Bohème more.
Nestled in the vaults of a Georgian building, La Bohéme is atmosphere personified. Its flagstone floors, lime washed walls and arched ceilings will remind you of a French chateau.
The three menus are chock full of French fare cooked to a standard you rarely come across in Ireland. That's not surprising, however, considering the head chef, Eric Thezè, started his career in Brittany at the age of 14.
