The fine people of Galway will be treated to a circus festival this weekend and throughout next week.
Galway Community Circus is holding their second annual presentation of their Mayhem Youth Circus Festival from 22-30 of May.
The action-packed roster of programming features performances, games, workshops and circus talks and all events will take place in Shantalla Park and online via Zoom and on their
Facebook page.
Events include Healthy Ireland Funambulism Workshops, where people can learn the art of tightwire walking with a balancing pole while improving their balance, mindfulness and self-awareness. There will also be a mix of taster workshops for all circus lovers consisting of introductory activities where participants will play fun games and learn tips to improve their solo acrobatics, juggling and circus skills.
I don't know about you, but I've always fancied myself as having some circus skills. Sure you never know when you'll need it.
Some of the online events include ‘Our Love for The Streets’, with a performance of ‘New Stool - Old Fool’ by Grant Goldie commissioned by the National Circus Festival of Ireland, as well as tea and chats with singer-songwriter Nicole Blue from the Galway Buskers Community about what street performance and busking means to Galway.
Ulla Hokkanen, Executive Creative Director of Galway Community Circus said, "We are so excited to host our Mayhem Youth Circus Festival for a second year. We have an exciting week of hybrid programming planned including outdoor funambulism workshops, circus workshops and online events. Mayhem has something for everyone and we’re excited to bring back some fun, friendship and connection to our community."
Galway Community Circus is Ireland’s flagship organisation for youth and social circus, located in Galway City with a local, national and international remit with the aim of advancing the artistic, personal and social development of young people through Circus Arts.
All events will be free to attend and are supported by their funding partners The Arts Council, Erasmus+, Galway City Council, The Community Foundation for Ireland and the RTE Comic Relief Fund.
