Ed Sheeran is in the good books this week, having surprised one young Sligo fan with a very generous gift.
Never meet your heroes, as the saying goes... but no one ever said anything about writing to them. And going by 10-year-old Lily O'Brien's experience, we'll all be penning heartfelt notes to our fave celebs soon enough.
Keeping busy during lockdown however she could, Lily's mam told the
Independent that the youngster spent much of her free time learning how to type.
"During lockdown my daughter Lily was learning to type. Having dyslexia she finds writing extremely hard."
First sending a get well card to Ryan Tubridy when he was sick with Covid, the presenter wrote back a couple of days later inspiring Lily to write to other well- known people she admires - top of the list being Ed Sheeran.
But with no address for the singer, Lily had to get creative, simply writing "Ed Sheeran, Singer of the Galway Girl, London" on the envelope. Sceptical that the letter would ever reach the famous red-haired musician, it probably helps that he's pretty much a household name and the postal service had no problems finding his gaff. That's almost as good as the time An Post successfully delivered a scone recipe addressed to "
Brian O'Driscoll, rugby legend".
Ever a gentleman, Ed responded to the letter also surprising Lily with the generous gift of one of his signature Sheeran by Lowden acoustic guitars.
