If you've been craving an excellent Irish flick to watch this summer then look no further: get yourself down to the Galway Film Fleadh for the premiere of short film Wild Fire Nights.
Shot in Dublin and Galway, this hard-hitting contemporary drama follows Lila, an Irish gal in her twenties who is buzzing along in a self-destructive lifestyle, until an alarming discovery forces her to face the consequences of her actions.
Written, directed by and starring Emma Eliza Regan (praised for her performance in Darkness On The Edge Of Town opposite Brian Gleeson) the film paints a strong character in the form of Lila, a millennial many Irish women will relate to in some way or another.
The movie sensitively and intelligently captures the private world of Irish young women, or as Regan says, “the selfie generation and all the questions that surround the effects of that”, as well as the highly topical issue of abortion rights in Ireland.
Speaking of the inspiration to make this film, Regan said that she wanted to “portray the secret world of many young women, responding to the negative impact social media has, it relies on a lot of validation from others, and in a situation where one’s worth only comes from her sex appeal – there’s severe consequences on the psyche of young women which I could see it around me every single day, but nobody was capturing the dark sides of it.”
The short has attracted a stellar Irish cast attached including award winning actor Gerard McSorley (In The Name Of The Father, Veronica Guerin), Galway born IFTA award winning actor Dara Devaney, David Murray and James Browne.
As for the move from acting to directing, Regan is more than qualified to tackle the subject of the film, saying that "as a woman in my twenties myself, I felt I could write about these topics in a way that’s authentic, and create a space in film that young women connect with".
After the Galway screening, the crew hopes it will screen internationally at festivals.
We're hoping so too - a film this clever needs to be viewed far and wide.
Wild Fire Nights will screen at Galway Film Fleadh on Wednesday July 12th.
