Family-friendly films absolutely cleaned up at the box office last year.

The biggest hit was The Secret Life of Pets, followed by Finding Dory. The Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them rounded off the top three most-watched films in cinemas worldwide. Zootopia was in fourth while Rogue One was the fifth most-viewed movie.

When it comes to European-made films, Fantastic Beasts and Bridget Jones's Baby top the list but no Irish film managed to break the top 20 European productions.

New figures published by Newstalk also show that us Irish love the cinema.

The number of people going to the cinema increased by 4%, despite the fact that the number of admissions are falling in several EU countries, including the UK.

Overall, 15.8 million tickets were sold last year and going by last year's Census figures, that means the average Irish person pays a visit to the cinema three times a year - well above the EU average.
