The most liked Irish tweet of 2020 comes as no surprise

Twitter has released its statistics for 2020 and there are some interesting results relating to the Irish corner of the social media platform.

In a year in which online chat was dominated by the pandemic, it's no surprise that #Covid19 and #Coronavirus were the most used news hashtags of the year. These were followed by #GE2020 in relation to February's General Election (remember that?), #BlackLivesMatter, #GolfGate and #Brexit. 2020 was also the year of Normal People, a show which catapulted Kidare actor Paul Mescal to worldwide fame back in the spring. Naturally, some British publications mistakenly described him as one of their own and Mescal's simple 'I'm Irish' response in July became the most favourited Irish tweet of the year with over 131,000 likes. Other popular tweets included CMO Tony Holohan's announcement that he would be stepping away from his role to spend time with his family. Ireland collectively mourned the passing of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman in August while there was also much discussion over the Wild Mountain Thyme movie trailer that came out in November. Irish Liverpool fans rejoiced over the #LFC hashtag when the Reds became Premier League champions during the summer and, of course, #Trump and #Election2020 generated plenty of comment when it came to international news stories.
