2020 was also the year of Normal People, a show which catapulted Kidare actor Paul Mescal to worldwide fame back in the spring. Naturally, some British publications mistakenly described him as one of their own and Mescal's simple 'I'm Irish' response in July became the most favourited Irish tweet of the year with over 131,000 likes.
Other popular tweets included CMO Tony Holohan's announcement that he would be stepping away from his role to spend time with his family. Ireland collectively mourned the passing of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman in August while there was also much discussion over the Wild Mountain Thyme movie trailer that came out in November.
Irish Liverpool fans rejoiced over the #LFC hashtag when the Reds became Premier League champions during the summer and, of course, #Trump and #Election2020 generated plenty of comment when it came to international news stories.
It just goes to show, even in the age of a global pandemic, Mescal will always come out on top.
