No, it won't be for just listening to The Queen's Gambit...
Netflix are always up for trying new things, be it giving us the Top Ten's on our homepages, or adding in variable play speeds, or even the Shuffle option, for those who don't know what to watch next, and allow Netflix to pick something at random, but based off their previous watches.
In an interesting development, Netflix are currently testing an audio-only option for some subscribers, which effectively allows you to turn the video off on the Netflix app on your phone.
Why would anyone want to do that, you might ask?
Well, it actually makes a certain kind of sense considering how many true-crime documentaries Netflix have in their library, so this would be a smart way to become direct competition with the podcast market. Headphones in, audio-only, away you go.
Netflix told
Variety the following about the test:
"We’re always looking for new ways to improve the Netflix mobile experience for our members. We run tests in different countries and for different periods of time - and only make them broadly available if people find them useful."
While this new addition won't be suitable for everything on the streaming service - something like The Haunting of Hill House, with long silences and a lot of visual jump scares, won't work here - but it could be a great way to check out those aforementioned documentaries, as well as stand-up comedy specials.
Better yet, you can add in "Audio Description" under the Audio & Subtitles option (where available), so you can still hear what is going on on-screen.
