There's nothing worse than planning for weeks to see a film in the cinema only to find that it's gone as soon as you get an evening free. This was almost the case for myself in the run-up to Christmas but thankfully I managed to catch Katie on its last day of screening at the Omniplex in Rathmines and I was delighted that I did.
For those of you who don't know, Katie tells the story of Ireland's Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Katie Taylor's attempts at breaking into the world of professional boxing and if you did miss it the you're in luck as RTÉ will be showing it next week.
Featuring contributions from those who know her best, the film follows Katie from her roots in Bray, taking in her rise through the ranks, her golden moment at London 2012 and her devastating elimination at Rio 2016.
One of the great things about the movie is that director Ross Whitaker doesn't shy away from documenting Katie's family problems as her relationship with her coach and father Pete breaks down.
For her part, Katie unsurprisingly comes across as dedicated and focused but its the lighter sides of her character that really come to the fore. Warm moments with family and friends are dotted throughout the film as Katie isn't spared an auld slagging from those who know her best. She also displays a talent for self-deprecation with a number of quips at her own expense landing as well as most of her punches.
