The makers of the top-secret new Borat movie want you to see it as soon as possible.
Released in 2006, Borat - or to give the movie its full title: Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - was kind of a landmark moment in modern comedy. It made over $250 million at the box office, was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, and Sasha Baron Cohen actually won Best Actor for a Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes.
Comedies usually get overlooked by the awards system, so when one manages to break through like that, then you know you're on to something.
Up until the last few days, there had been no word that a sequel was on the way, until it was suddenly announced that the movie had already been shot, edited, and was due for imminent release.
Borat 2 - or to give the movie its full title: Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan - will apparently be skipping the cinema entirely, partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also because the makers of the movie want viewers to see it as soon as possible.
The goal is to get the movie out before Election Day 2020 (Tuesday, November 3), as Cohen (who is also about to appear in Netflix's potential Oscar-magnet
The Trial of the Chicago 7) has reportedly been interviewing some very high profile politicians for the sequel, and even involved himself in some scenes so dangerous that
Deadline states he was forced to wear a bulletproof vest during filming.
So now we can expect Borat and his "pornographic monkey" to arrive exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from Friday, October 23. Very nice!
