Put 9pm tonight aside, quizzers, because one of the best new quiz shows of 2020 is returning for a second series starting this evening.
We say 'new quiz show' but
Beat the Chasers is obviously a spin-off of The Chase which has been massively successful since it first aired in the UK in 2009. Last year, bosses at the daytime favourite felt they needed something new and, lo and behold, back in April all five chasers were teamed up to take on contestants in a much-tweaked format.
Basically, the new version takes the numerical advantage away from the contestants and gives it to the chasers. Contestants answer up to five multiple-choice questions in the cash builder round in a bid to reach £5,000 before they are faced with a decision that will make or break their chances of going home with some money.
They must choose whether to take on just two chasers for the amount they have won in the cash builder or face more chasers for increasing sums of money. Also, the more money they go for, the more time the chasers have to hunt them down. Still confused? Don't worry, the ever-loveable Bradley Walsh will explain all when the first episode of the new series airs tonight on Virgin Media.
This time, there will be seven episodes of Beat the Chasers, taking us right up to next Saturday night but if you're hoping to see
new Irish chaser Darragh 'The Menace' Ennis on the show, you might be disappointed. Having only made his debut on The Chase in November, pandemic-enforced scheduling issues meant that he wasn't including in filming for the spin--off because producers thought it
would be 'peculiar' to feature him if he hadn't yet appeared on the parent show.
Anyway, hopefully The Menace turns up in the third series but for now, you'll have to make do with The Governess, The Beast and all the rest. You can catch the first episode of the second series of Beat the Chasers on Virgin Media One from 9pm tonight.
