The Great British Bake Off returned to TV screens last night, kicking off with a highly dramatic and very entertaining season opener. Please be warned, this post contains spoilers. Obviously. The Great British Bake Off is one of the most gloriously wholesome things on TV and if you're not a fan then I'm afraid we can't be friends... sorry to be so blunt about it, but I just don't think we'd have anything in common. In fact, I get so invested in the series that I genuinely start sweating for contestants any time there's a baking disaster - the dough doesn't rise, the cheesecake doesn't set, the giant cake tower collapses just as Paul goes in for a bite. Don't even get me started on the curse of the soggy bottom. Mary Berry really has a way with words - I have much to learn from her. Making its grand return to telly boxes last night, baking enthusiasts around the country settled in for an evening on the couch - later reuniting online for a post-episode debrief. As always, the show started off with cake week where contestants were tasked with taking on both the Battenberg cake and the fruit sponge before moving onto the final challenge - the showstopper where bakers were asked to make a bust of their favourite celebrity. Below you'll find some of the funniest GBBO tweets so prepare to be very amused. https://twitter.com/shane_reaction_/status/1308503722776047617 https://twitter.com/NickL1990/status/1308512448522194946 https://twitter.com/IAmTomMitchells/status/1308507901208784903 https://twitter.com/W1gglyw1g/status/1308511440303788032 https://twitter.com/MichaelxMyersx/status/1308507178677006337 https://twitter.com/JazzM1999/status/1308506899269255168 https://twitter.com/whimsikat_/status/1308506631119011840 https://twitter.com/whydidfIy/status/1308512010263506946 https://twitter.com/absolutegazelle/status/1308506944492232705 https://twitter.com/maadimaate/status/1308514401188749330 https://twitter.com/AMHalz94/status/1308506966709460993 https://twitter.com/hollierebekahx/status/1308509395563749378 https://twitter.com/LJHawksworth/status/1308504843460411392 https://twitter.com/Channel4/status/1308503560343244801 Arguably one of the most dramatic season openers to date, the real drama happened when baker Sura accidentally knocked fellow contestant Dave's bakes to the floor. https://twitter.com/HERRTHEQUEEN/status/1308506151538110470 https://twitter.com/superTV247/status/1308506570796474368 Please enjoy this Great British Bake Off-themed cover of WAP by the ever-hilarious Fionnuala Jay to finish.
