The earliest origins of the horror films can be traced back to the 1890s, where the genre began to develop based upon classic novels written by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley.

Since then the horror genre has developed massively with highlights such as the terrible 80s horror phase and more recent cult classics like American Horror Story and Stranger Things.

This is a list of the most terrible of the terrifying and the biggest spooks of the scary.

1. Hush

The description alone will send shivers down your spine as this film tells the tale of a woman who lives alone and is being stalked by a serial killer.

The scariest aspect? She's deaf, so she doesn't even notice.

2. Paranormal Activity

The first in the iconic horror series is definitely the creepiest. A young couple move to a haunted house and what happens next is pretty predicatable.

Freak yourself out with this very realistic take on the paranormal.

3. Case 39

Renée Zellweger stars in this freaky flick where she plays a social care worker who attempts to look after a troubled child.

But the child is more troubled than she first expected...

4. He Never Died

This gruesome one includes cannibalism, immortality and sheer violence.

You wouldn't want a sensitive stomach to be sure!

5. The Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliffe hits up the big screen once again, only this time it's no child's game. The Woman in Black follows the story of a lawyer who tries to solve the amounting cases of missing persons in his local town.

Truly creepy.

6. Rogue

If you found Jaws petrifying then Rogue will defo have you quaking in your boots.

Take a man-eating crocodile, the Australian outback, a jaded American journalist and put it altogether on a sinking mud island and you have this horrific film.

7. The Town That Dreaded Sundown

This is a sequel to the 1976 original. Set in a town on the border between Texas and Arkansas, we follow a serial killer as they attempt to repeat the crimes committed 65 years ago.
