Governing bodies at both Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology have confirmed that they will come together to form a consortium.
Announcing the news on Tuesday, they revealed plans to come together as one and form a Technological University.
Both institutions submitted a joint application for funding earlier this year to get the ball rolling on a TU consortium and opening the pathway to begin work.

This follows on from a government pledge of €90 million that is to be made available for the development of technological universities over the next three years.
According to President of LIT, Professor Vincent Cunnane, the move is “generationally significant for the Mid-West”.

He went on to say the project will allow both Its to “develop a unique new Technological University that will have a clear regional focus with a national and international outlook”.
President of AIT, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, also welcomed the move labelling it “transformative”.
