Locals have made renewed calls for the famous Salthill tidal pools to be restored, with an online petition set up in support of the cause already amassing close to 3,500 signatures.
Once "full of life" and enjoyed by all, Galwegians have been pushing for the tidal pools to be restored to their former glory for some time now. Calling on Galway City Council to help get the initiative over the line, an online petition was set up in aid of the cause with 3,407 locals already expressing their support.
Commenting that "sea swimming is at an all-time high in Galway and across all of Ireland", the open letter goes on to explain how the restoration of the Salthill tidal pools will serve the entire community.
"Tidal pools allow members of the public to swim in a protected area, whilst being right by the sea. We believe now is the perfect time for Salthill to reopen the tidal pools."
Adding that they are "safe, durable, inexpensive, and serve a large part of the local community", many have agreed that they would a "fantastic resource" over the coming months.
"There are tidal pools in seaside towns all over the world, it is quite normal to have them. And the Salthill Pools already exist - we just need to refurbish and reopen them."
