There’s nothing better than packing the bags and heading off somewhere for a last-minute escape from the hustle and bustle of real life.
Now, while I love a good weekend sesh as much as the next person, there’s a lot to be said for going somewhere totally peaceful and off the beaten track, too.
Gweedore in Co. Donegal is just such a spot – there’s nowhere better than the rugged countryside in this part of Ireland to clear the cobwebs off and switch off from the world for a few days.
The Gaeltacht area on the Atlantic Coast of Donegal has completely unparalleled scenery, from Mount Errigal to the long, sandy beaches along the Wild Atlantic Way.
I spent a lot of my childhood summers here in the Gaeltacht, (reluctantly) hiking and exploring the countryside and for me, there’s not many other places in Ireland that compare.
It’s often described as a walkers’ paradise and there’s no shortage of hillside and coastal routes you can take to admire the stunning scenery around you.
And for the more adventurous folk out there, Gweedore offers no end of rock climbing, sailing and kayaking, where you can discover hidden coves and caves along the way.
Of course, a visit to Gweedore wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the beautiful nearby Glenveagh National Park, with its beautiful views over Lough Veagh and Glenveagh Castle.
Glenveagh is home to the largest herd of red deer in Ireland and the park’s gardens are full of exotic plants from around the world, so you’re absolutely spoiled for beautiful scenery here.
Gweedore is filled with great little pubs and restaurants, too - make sure you stop into Séan Óg’s restaurant in Derrybeg for the seafood chowder while you’re here and you will not be disappointed.
The best part about staying here is that Gweedore is full of B&Bs, guesthouses hotels and hostels, so even if, like me, you’re not the best at booking too far ahead, you’ll never be short of finding somewhere to stay.
