US politician Hillary Clinton has been appointed as the new Chancellor of Queen’s University in Belfast.
The 11th Chancellor of the university and first female to hold the role, the position came into effect on January 1st and will serve for a period of five years.
Queen’s University took to Twitter to announce the news, releasing the following statement from Hillary on the matter:
“It is a great privilege to become the Chancellor of Queen’s University, a place I have great fondness for and have grown a strong relationship with over the years.
The University is making waves internationally for its research and impact and I am proud to be an ambassador and help grow its reputation for excellence”.
As Chancellor, Clinton will fulfil three main roles, with responsibilities including the following:
-presiding at degree congregations
-acting as an ambassador for the university
-acting as an advisor, providing counsel and guidance to the vice-Chancellor and senior management
Clinton received an honorary degree from the university in 2018 and according to Stephen Prenter, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Senate of Queens, she “has made a considerable contribution to Northern Ireland”.

He later added that she will be “an incredible advocate” and “inspirational role model” for the university and wider community.
