Red Bull Crashed Ice takes place in Stormont, Belfast this weekend. Its part of the Ice Cross Downhill World Championships hosted by the global brand. This is the fastest and most exciting sport on skates, and if you haven't heard of it before I'm surprised because Red Bull (the kings of extreme sports) have held 35 of these events across the world to date since 2001. Crashed Ice have had over 10K competitors race down the icy track in 8 different countries. This year they're hitting up 4 cities and Belfast is the 3rd instalment.
The track build itself is super impressive, and this is no surprise as Red Bull do nothing in half measures when it comes to events. It's taken over 34 days and 30,000 hours to construct the whopper 430 metre-long track. This includes some serious stats - 1,600 light fittings, 22,300 metres of cooling pipe and 337,000 cubic litres of ice. And lucky for us (and you) we got our hands on some exclusive behind the scenes footage of the track being built at the famous landmark.
It will take each skater approx 40 seconds to complete the course which has a 40 meter vertical drop with 5 bends and they'll reach speeds of up to 65km/h. The event kicks off this evening in Stormont, Belfast, runs for two nights and they hope to have over 40,000 spectators turn up to watch the action.
