Dublin Landlords Asking For Two Months Deposit Upfront

It seems that Dublin landlords now consider one month's rent just too small an amount to deem adequate for tenant stability as a number of Dublin house letters are now demanding two months rent in the form of a deposit.

The standard deposit in this country is one month's rent upfront - to act as collateral for those letting out properties to what may be a total stranger. 

However, according to 98fm, it appears more and more landlords are looking to double their deposit, mirroring their counterparts in the institutional sector.

Labour TD and former Minister for Housing Jan O Sullivan spoke about the harrowing new development and the legal implications:

"The Residential Tenancies Board has the power to intervene in these kinds of disputes. If (landlords) are looking for two months deposit as well as the first month's rent, I'm not sure that's actually legally allowed. I think there could be ministerial intervention if that's needed to stop this."
